The story began in 2017 with good friends Kim Martucci and Nisha Bouri in America. Tied to the DC metropolitan area for work, they are both members of the DC Modern Quilt Guild and attend the same types of sewing retreats. It isn’t long before they plan a road trip to the May 2017 Brimfield Antiques Show to sniff out some vintage quilty goodness.

At the show they came across a vintage orphan block....

It was love at first site. From that day on, their planning began. They knew they had to get this pattern out into the world. What they didn’t know at that time was just how beautifully the blocks would look when pieced together without traditional sashing in between – the two different areas of negative space that would result. So, one diner at a time from Vernon CT down to East Brunswick NJ they plotted their game plan over bowls of matzo ball soup and Reubens. Over the course of the Jersey Turnpike they hatched Brimfield Awakening and the Brimfield Block Quilt.

To make the Brimfield block quilt you will need to purchase the pattern, acrylic templates, and paper pieces for one block or a complete quilt 12 blocks these paper pieces.

These are the four Brimfield Block acrylic templates you will need to make one Brimfield Quilt Block. They include the Short House, Fat House, Tall House and Orange Peel. The house pieces have drilled holes so that you can further subdivide the house tips into separate pieces.

See those dashed lines and drilled holes in the templates above? They are there to help you trace the different parts of the house pieces (base or tips) separately onto your fabric. Have a look at the tutorial below to see how this is done.

The paper pieces are unique in that they have perforation. This allows you the flexibility to create more pieces for additional fussy cutting.

About two weeks before Kim & Nisha left for International Quilt Market in Houston, they started playing with the Brimfield blocks because, " isn’t that what you do when you have five thousand pressing items on your to-do list?" Anyway they said “What would happen if we removed all the TALL HOUSES and made our block with only ORANGE PEEL sections and add an extra ORANGE PEEL section to make it work?” And the Brimfield Star Block - "BrimfieldBlockSTAR" was born.

You can use the Brimfield Awakening Block templates to make the Brimfield Block Star blocks (you simple don't use the Tall House template)
